Cagliari, between sea and hills
Founded by the Phoenicians and capital of Sardinia since Roman times, Cagliari climbs from its harbour to the walled Castello quarter, built by the Pisans in the 13th century. From the Saint Remy Bastion you see the whole Gulf of Angels, from the Devil's Saddle headland to the Molentargius salt pans, home to pink flamingos.
Poetto, the city beach, is about twenty minutes from the centre. Along the coast are Villasimius to the east and Nora and the dunes of Chia to the south-west.
